Volunteerism

Currently, I volunteer with Common Boston and the APMM.

Seth, my husband, was an original member of ArchFest in 2005, the predecessor to Common Boston, a BSA committee. ArchFest was an architecture festival that focused on Boston proper buildings and spaces. Since then, the group has taken a people-based approach to make a festival about Boston’s communities and their relation to their neighborhoods. Thus, the annual festivals became about it’s buildings, spaces, AND people. Common Boston’s festival is coming this June, and plannning is underway. The board is no longer a group solely of young architects. It now consists of people of all backgrounds around the city, previous volunteers and subsequential festival goers. If you’re interested in volunteering for the upcoming festival, please contact info@commonboston.org.

Web Help Needed. As busy as I am, I am not as available to CB as I used to be. We would like to get a new website up and running that’s more visually activated. However, I am swamped with work and school, and other volunteer activities. If you know anything about website development, and would like to help this great young organization, please feel free to contact me.

A couple of years ago, I was looking for a way to advance my model making. I came upon modelmakers.org, the website of the Association of Professional Model Makers (APMM). I instantly became a member and later went to the biennial 2008 conference in Portland, OR. At that conference, I was appointed the “VP of Communications”, which is the fancy way of saying I am the newsletter editor and communications consultant, who also designs logos and print materials from time to time.

Communications Design Help Needed. This year, APMM is having their biennial international conference in Boston, and I’m also helping with the conference materials and workshops. If you’re interested in learning more, drop me a line!

Depending on my summer schedule, I have also volunteered for KidsBuild, as a project packet photographer. KidsBuild is an event where kids come with their families and learn the city building process. They select a zone to work in (like commercial), apply for a building permit, and get plots of “land” in the workspace. Then they sketch an idea of their building and go to the “construction yard” to build a model of their building to go on their plot. When they’re done they get their picture of them taken with their project that gets adhered to their project packet to take home. This teaches kids the general concept of urban planning and the building processes of their own city.
