A friend of mine was very curious about WordPress when he found out I started using it. Christian is using Blogger, which I had tried some time ago. He had many questions, and suggested I post my answers to my blog. So here are my answers:
Are you using a theme?
Yes, it’s a free theme called DePo Masthead by Derek Powazek (see bottom)
How easy is it to customize?
In general, I like WordPress’ interface. Adding pages is easy. You drag and drop what column you want to put your widgets. It’s easy to add RSS feed, which I’ve done with my delicious links. However, other things depend on which theme you’re using. Everything is pre-formatted by your theme, so you don’t have to worry about it, but if you want to customize the font (for example), you would have to dig into the theme code. So if you put WP on your server’s side, and know some CSS code, you can edit the theme code and have a lot of customizing freedom. I’m not doing that until I understand what that all means.
But also, different themes have different options. Some may have a better layout, but with fewer customizable options, and vice versa. You can change your theme any time. But since themes have different layouts, you would have to move your widgets around to see where they fit best.
How easy is it to update and organize?
Updating is very easy. Just login at WordPress and nav to the page you want to edit. Edit and click the update button. I think Blogger is similar. I also like WordPress’ interface. Better then Blogger, I think. Easier to figure out what’s where. Adding pages and posts is all a snap.
What don’t you like about it?
Since I’m using it on WP’s servers, the theme is locked, and I can’t customize it. I wish I could have widgets on some of my pages, too. You can only add some, via code. My theme also adds a thin border around any tables, which I find distracting, and is why I am avoiding table-based layouts in pages.
What do you like about it?
I feel like it is easier to use than Blogger. I felt Blogger was limited with customization and widgets. WP takes care of all the back-end stuff. You can make RSS feeds of blogs with a tag, or in a category. Pages and Posts are easy to handle. Managing/moderating seems easy, also.

Great Post Julie! I’m definitely going to eventually switch over to WP. Blogger is simple, but almost too much so for me. Yet its also difficult in other ways. Its really hard, imho to make any blogger page not look like a blogger page. Its not that you can’t, it just seems like its more work than its worth! I also find Blogger to be buggy. And the themes are so so. WordPress seems to also have a great online presence for q&a’s as well!
Thanks again for answering these questions! Your blog looks great and I look forward to reading more!… I’ll be sure to let you know when I get my site going with WP!
